Geography 006 Field Trip:
"Local Places in a Globalizing World"
Johnston County, NC

Students in the Geography Department's First-Year Seminar, "Local Places in a Globalizing World," recently visited and talked with farmworkers in Johnston County, North Carolina. This was an unusual opportunity to see firsthand how seasonal workers live when they travel north from Mexico to harvest crops in the U.S. One man told us repeatedly of his as-yet-unfulfilled desire to pursue higher education in Mexico or the United States. We also met with staff members from the Farm Worker Project in Benson, North Carolina, who serve these communities.
The trip was made possible by a Intellectual Life Grant from the James M. Johnston Center for Undergraduate Excellence and was coordinated by Dr. Altha J. Cravey.
