Honors Undergraduate Research Awards

Financial support for expenses related to the senior Honors thesis is available on a competitive basis through the Honors Undergraduate Research Awards.

Honors Undergraduate Research Awards may be used to support any legitimate cost directly connected to the undertaking of an Honors thesis project: laboratory equipment or supplies, computer software or time, costs related to field research, artistic supplies or equipment, books or periodicals not available through normal library sources, and similar needs. Travel will be supported only where such travel is absolutely essential to the project and only for the actual cost of transportation. Any equipment or non-expended supplies purchased under this program will become the property of the recipient's academic department at the conclusion of the project.

Except in unusual circumstances, individual awards will not exceed $500, although projects with an international dimension may qualify for a supplemental award of up to $500 available on a competitive basis from the University Center for International Studies (UCIS). Such applications are automatically forwarded to UCIS for review; students are not required to submit an additional application.

The Honors Program sets an administrative deadline for the application process each year, but each department's Honors advisor establishes the effective deadline for students. This deadline is earlier than the Honors office's deadline, and students should check directly with their departmental Honors advisor to confirm the date. Students and thesis advisors should not submit Honors Undergraduate Research Award application materials directly to the Honors Program office; applications must come to the office through departmental Honors advisors.

More information about the current application process and a printable application form (in Microsoft Word format) are available online.
