Willie Lowery and Pura Fé Locklear
Thursday, October 24, 2002
11:00-1:30
Educational Foundation Terrace, Graham Memorial Hall
Willie Lowery (a Lumbee guitarist) and Pura Fé Locklear (a Tuscarora singer) will perform
blues and traditional Tuscarora music.
Several years ago, Lowery and Locklear collaborated on an
album that brings these styles together in songs that celebrate
North Carolina's unique and inspiring Indian history and express
the strength that the state's Indian groups have used to survive.
Also accompanying them for this performance will be David
Locklear and Mark Deese, singers with the
Kau-ten-oh Juniors (a Tuscarora drum group), who will perform
some traditional Tuscarora songs. The performance will include
audience participation opportunities, and the musicians will
discuss the origins and meanings of their songs.
This event, part of the
Thursdays on the Terrace series presented by the JCUE,
is offered in the spirit of celebrating Native American Heritage
Month.
