Thursdays on the Terrace, Spring 2004:

Performances occured at the James M. Johnston Center for Undergraduate Excellence in Graham Memorial. All performances are free and open to the public.

Thursdays on the Terrace:
Brazilian Music by Escola de Samba & Capoeira performance by Grupo Capoeira
Thursday, January 22, John Lindsay Morehead II Lounge, Graham Memorial, 12-2:00 p.m.
Our popular performance series begins its Spring 2004 schedule with the music of Escola de Samba, directed by Eduardo De Souza and a Capoeira performance by Grupo Capoeira, directed by Contra-Mestre Caxia.
Eduardo De Souza performed as a professional dancer in the Miami area for ten years, before moving to the Triangle in 1999. As the director of Escola de Samba Carolina, Eduardo teaches Samba Batucada, Samba de Roda , Pagode and Forro styles of percussion, as well as Rio-style samba dance.
Contra-Mestre Caxia has been playing capoeira for over twenty years. As a youngster, he played capoeira in the streets of Rio de Janeiro even before beginning an eight-year period of formal training with Mestre Bodinho. He then began training with Mestre Boneco of Grupo Capoeira Brasil. In June 1994, Contra-Mestre Caxias moved to New York where he started that city's first Capoeira Brasil group. In just a few years, his original classes of three have expanded to nearly one hundred students.

The Europa Jazz Quartet
Thursday, February 19, John Lindsay Morehead II Lounge, Graham Memorial, 12-2:00 p.m.
Formed in the Spring of 2003, the Europa Jazz Quartet plays swing jazz in the tradition of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli, and their famous "Quintet of the Hot Club of France." The sound is evocative of the 1930's swing era with the feeling of jazz clubs, and the energy of jazz influence by European gypsy music. The sound is unique partly because the instrumentation is all string instruments. The music varies from slow romantic ballads to fast, hot swing and includes traditional jazz standards as well as the classic Reinhardt and Grapelli originals of the 1930s. The musicians in the Europa Quartet are: Paul Gruen, guitar; Gabe Pelli, violin; Wells Gordon, upright bass; Bryan Gibson, guitar.
